Going Round The Bend In Brno For 6 Hours
Dara O’Kearney
Getting ready
In terms of preparation and training, this was definitely one of my weaker efforts for an ultra. While I thankfully remained injury free and healthy, and did follow coach Norrie Williamson’s training schedule as best I could, it’s fair to say that I was struggling with motivation and finding it hard to hit the prescribed times in the speed sessions.
It’s fair to say that since I started playing poker professionally earlier this year, and particularly since my win in February’s European Deepstack Poker championships, poker figured much more prominently in my thinking than ultra running, something Norrie told me afterwards he picked up on from the frequency and content of my emails to him in recent months.

Dear (Ultra)Runner,
Have you heard about the UltraBalaton, an Ultra running race from Hungary?
It’s one of the most beautiful races in Europe. The distance is 212km which can be done both individually or in a relay.
This year the IAU wrote: "It was the closest ultra run finish in the century! The famous Greek ultra runner Yiannis Kouros finished the race only 300m behind the hungarian champion Bogár János."
The history of the UltraBalaton started last year. The participants enjoyed the race and the professonal runners were satisfied.
Let me draw your special attention - beside the beautiful and enthralling sights of the Balaton and the course - on the frequency of the refreshment stations as there will be refreshments every 3-5 km. And naturally the partys can’t be missed from such a big event either…
Hope we have managed to awake your interest and you will visit our website on www.ultrabalaton.hu ( it’s available for english too!) where you can find all the details.
In case you have any questions please don’t hesitate to turn to us at any of our availibilities.
The registration is opened now!
We hope, we will meet at the race on 21-22 in June 2008 at the lake of Balaton!
Come and run a round with us!
Kind regards,
Nagy Péter

Jann Friis Søndergaard sends news of a new 100 mile race in Denmark !! The event takes place on 6 – 7 July 2007. My Danish isnt very good even with an online translator but it looks like the organisers were inspired by World Runner, Jesper Olsen who will be running the race. Any questions send an email to the organisers who speak English.

The race consist of one long (marked) loop and is a low key event but has already entrants from 5 different nations. It starts in southern Sweden and has a cut off time of 32 hours – one third of the race is run on the sand. There will be only three aid stations but many possibilities to fill up on water.
