Sichel announces a return to the World’s longest road race – 3100 miles

Orkney-based ultra marathon runner, William Sichel (63)shows no sign of slowing down as he has accepted an invitation to return to New York, for a second time, to contest the 21st edition of the World’s Longest Road Race – the Sri Chinmoy 3100 Mile race beginning on June 18th.

“I must admit that I feel priveliged and delightedfor my family, my support team and for Orkney, for being invited back to this prestigious event. Quite an honour for someone of my age, with only about 10 people getting an invitation this year.”

Described by the New York Times as the “Mount Everest of ultramarathons”, competitors must average 60 miles a day, every day in order to complete the distance inside the strict 52 days time limit.

“It’s certainly a formidable task as I know from experience. It really is the most incredible test of a human being mentally, physically and spiritually.”

William became Britain’s only ever finisher of this event within the time limit in August 2014 when recording a time of 50 days, 15 hours, 6 minutes and 4 seconds.  This also meant that William became the oldest ever finisher and the first person aged over 60 to finish, since the event’s inception in 1997.

William will run a 24 hour track race in Crawley on April 1st/2nd and then have 10 days warm weather training in Lanzarote as part  of his build up to the event.
