This weekend sees the start of the 2024 Montane Summer Spine race
The Montane Summer Spine is a non-stop, 268 mile race along the most iconic national trail in Britain; the Pennine Way. Beginning from Edale in Derbyshire, runners have a time limit of 156 hours to reach the finish line.
The Montane Summer Spine crosses some of the finest upland landscapes in the country, from the Peak District, through the Yorkshire Dales, across the North Pennines and over World Heritage-listed Hadrian’s Wall, on to the remote Cheviot Hills and, finally, the finish line in that elusive village of Kirk Yetholm. It is a very exposed and challenging route with summer temperatures fluctuating from over 25°C during the day dropping to 0°C overnight.
This is regarded as one of the UK’s most challenging endurance races. This challenge tests a runner’s physical resilience and mental fortitude in a non-stop and unsupported event, day and night.
Follow the ultrarunners as they make their way along one of the most famous trails in the UK this summer.
